A report by Oxford Economics reveals YouTube's creator ecosystem in India supported over 9.6 lakh full-time equivalent jobs and contributed ₹18,000 crore to the nation's GDP in 2025. This growth extends beyond metro cities to regional hubs.

India's burgeoning YouTube creator economy has emerged as a significant economic driver, generating more than 9.6 lakh full-time equivalent jobs and contributing over ₹18,000 crore to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2025. These findings, detailed in a report by Oxford Economics, underscore the expanding employment opportunities created by digital content production across various sectors.

Expanding Employment Beyond Metro Cities

The report highlights that the economic impact of YouTube's creative ecosystem extends far beyond individual content creators. It encompasses a wide array of professionals involved in production, editing, writing, marketing, and other essential creator-support activities. Notably, this employment generation is increasingly spreading beyond traditional metropolitan centers.

  • Regional Growth: Creative clusters are emerging in non-metro cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow, and Kochi, creating demand for video editors, camera operators, scriptwriters, and other specialists.
  • Apprenticeships: Monetizing creators supported over 3 lakh apprentices in the past year, further broadening the employment landscape around online content.
  • Primary Livelihood: Approximately 73% of creators who monetize content on YouTube reported the platform as their primary source of income.

Key Growth Indicators

The Indian YouTube landscape has witnessed remarkable growth, with several key indicators pointing to a robust and expanding creator base:

  • The number of Indian YouTube channels generating six figures or more in revenue increased by over 30% year-on-year.
  • More than 18,000 Indian channels have surpassed the one-million-subscriber mark.

Global Reach and Future Outlook

The job impact is also bolstered by rising global demand for Indian content. The report indicates that over 15% of watch time on content produced by Indian channels originates from viewers outside India. Regional-language and hyper-local content, in particular, are gaining international audiences, opening opportunities not just for creators but also for translators, editors, and production teams.

YouTube is also investing in digital skills and artificial intelligence. The company is collaborating with the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies under the “Create with AI” initiative. This includes rolling out AI-powered production tools like conversational AI editing for Shorts and agentic channel-management features in Ask Studio, alongside AI Likeness Detection and content disclosures.

As creators increasingly operate as small media enterprises, YouTube’s ecosystem continues to foster employment across content production, technology, and creative services, with its influence reaching from major urban centers to burgeoning regional hubs.
