IIT Delhi Alumnus Leaves Intel for ISRO, Achieves AIR 7 as Scientist

· · 2 min read

Hemant Kumar Bhukar, an IIT Delhi alumnus and former Intel semiconductor design engineer, successfully transitioned to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He secured All India Rank 7 in the highly competitive Scientist ‘A’ selection process, fulfilling a long-held ambition.

Hemant Kumar Bhukar, an alumnus of IIT Delhi, has made headlines with his remarkable career shift from a high-paying position at Intel to a coveted scientist role at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Bhukar, who spent nearly three years as a semiconductor design engineer, successfully secured All India Rank 7 (AIR 7) in ISRO’s Scientist ‘A’ selection, demonstrating exceptional dedication.

A Journey from IIT Delhi to Intel

Bhukar's academic foundation was laid at IIT Delhi, where he completed his BTech before pursuing an MTech in semiconductors. This specialized education prepared him for a significant role as a design engineer at Intel, a position many engineering graduates aspire to achieve. His work involved intricate semiconductor chip design, a field where he excelled for almost three years.

Balancing Corporate Demands with ISRO Aspirations

Despite a stable and rewarding career at Intel, Bhukar felt a growing pull towards research, public service, and contributing to India's burgeoning space program. Preparing for the rigorous ISRO examination while managing 7-8 hour work shifts at Intel presented a unique challenge. Unlike full-time aspirants, he dedicated early mornings, late evenings, and weekends to his studies, without the luxury of extended study leaves.

His extensive background in semiconductor engineering proved to be an invaluable asset, allowing him to build upon existing technical knowledge rather than starting from scratch. This consistency and discipline, rather than shortcuts, were key to his success.

Inspiration for Future Generations

Bhukar’s achievement has brought immense pride to his family and his hometown, Gothra Bhukran village in Rajasthan’s Sikar district. His father, Shishpal Bhukar, serves as an Additional Chief Engineer in the Public Works Department (PWD) in Bikaner, while his mother, Sushila, is a homemaker.

His story serves as a powerful inspiration for young students, particularly those from smaller towns and rural backgrounds, illustrating that with patience, discipline, and unwavering determination, significant career transitions and ambitious dreams are well within reach, irrespective of one’s origin or current professional path.
