The Odisha High Court has dismissed a crucial petition filed by Vedanta Aluminium, seeking bauxite supplies from the Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) at a historical rate of Rs 1,000 per tonne. This ruling implies a notable increase in the company's operational costs and a one-time financial liability.
CLSA Analyzes Financial Implications
Foreign brokerage CLSA has outlined two primary implications for Vedanta Aluminium: a one-time liability stemming from historical dues and a recurring increase in bauxite procurement costs. The brokerage estimates OMC's claim for historical dues to be approximately Rs 2,500 crore before tax, excluding interest.
Including interest, CLSA projects a one-time financial impact of up to $290 million, which represents about 2.8 percent of Vedanta Aluminium's market capitalization. The post-tax impact is estimated at around $195 million, or 1.2 percent of the company's market cap. Vedanta Aluminium is currently reviewing the judgment and exploring its legal options.
Projected Increase in Production Costs
CLSA further estimates a near-term increase of approximately $10 per tonne in aluminium production costs, effective from the first quarter of FY27. Vedanta Aluminium produced around 2.9 million tonnes of alumina in FY26, with 25 percent of its bauxite sourced from OMC, 25 percent from other domestic suppliers, and the remaining 50 percent imported, primarily from Guinea.
Since April 2026, Vedanta Aluminium has been booking OMC bauxite at Rs 3,000 per tonne, a significant jump from the previous contract price of Rs 1,000 per tonne. This new rate still remains below the current market price of roughly Rs 3,800 per tonne.
Mitigating Factors and Future Outlook
Despite the immediate challenges, CLSA suggests that the medium-term impact could be moderated by several factors. These include increased bauxite sourcing from OMC and the upcoming commissioning of Vedanta Aluminium's captive Sijimali bauxite mine.
OMC is reportedly close to securing approvals to boost its bauxite production capacity to 6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). This expansion could enable Vedanta Aluminium's Lanjigarh refinery to source more bauxite from OMC, potentially improving the company's bauxite mix and alumina production efficiency. Even at the revised price, OMC's bauxite is approximately $10 per tonne cheaper than other domestic sources and $20-$30 per tonne cheaper than imports on a landed basis.
Vedanta Aluminium has also received consent to operate its Sijimali bauxite mine. Once fully operational, this captive mine is expected to further reduce the company's overall bauxite costs. CLSA has maintained its 'Outperform' rating on the stock, suggesting that any market correction driven by the court order could present an accumulation opportunity, with a 12-month target price of Rs 540.
In Monday's trade, Vedanta Aluminium shares edged up 0.21 percent to Rs 403.70, despite having slipped 8 percent over the past month.
