HDFC Bank Market Cap Jumps Rs 12,027 Cr; Anup Bagchi Named CEO, Q2 Deposits Surge

· · 2 min read

HDFC Bank's market capitalization increased by over Rs 12,027 crore following the appointment of Anup Bagchi as its new MD & CEO. The bank also reported strong Q2 2026 growth, with average deposits up 16.8% and advances rising 14% year-on-year.

HDFC Bank experienced a significant boost in its market capitalization, adding over Rs 12,027 crore, as its shares rallied on Monday. This surge followed two key announcements: the Reserve Bank of India's approval of Anup Bagchi as the bank's next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective October 27, 2026, and robust financial results for the September 2026 quarter (Q2).

Leadership Transition and Market Reaction

The appointment of Anup Bagchi, a seasoned banking professional, as the new MD & CEO was met positively by the market. Analysts, including Nomura Holdings, noted that this decision removes a significant succession overhang, potentially opening avenues for strategic resets within the bank. HDFC Bank shares rose by 2.04% to Rs 734 in Monday's trading, contributing to the substantial increase in its market value, which now stands at Rs 11,21,163.31 crore.

Strong Q2 Financial Performance

The private lender reported impressive growth across its core operations for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2026. Average advances under management grew approximately 14% year-on-year (YoY), reaching Rs 31,872 billion. Similarly, average deposits saw a healthy increase of 16.8% YoY, totaling Rs 31,664 billion.

Detailed Growth Metrics:

  • Period-End Advances: Advances under management stood at Rs 33,075 billion as of September 30, 2026, marking a 15.3% YoY increase. Gross advances for the quarter reached Rs 32,195 billion, up 16.3% from the previous year.
  • Deposit Growth: Period-end deposits climbed to Rs 33,275 billion, an 18.8% YoY rise. Average Current Account Savings Account (CASA) deposits increased by 10.7% YoY to Rs 9,712 billion, while average time deposits grew by 19.7% to Rs 21,952 billion.
  • Period-End CASA and Time Deposits: At the end of the quarter, CASA deposits were Rs 10,520 billion (up 10.8% YoY), and time deposits reached Rs 22,755 billion (up 22.8% YoY).

Foreign Currency Mobilization

HDFC Bank also announced the successful mobilization of foreign currency deposits amounting to $1.115 billion. This was achieved under the Reserve Bank of India's swap facility for FCNR(B) deposits, which was introduced in June 2026. Against these deposits, the bank extended loan facilities totaling $5.7 billion, further diversifying its financial activities.

The Q2 2026 results for HDFC Bank are subject to a limited review by its statutory auditors, ensuring transparency and compliance.
