Delhi Traffic Police Trials AC Helmets to Combat Extreme Summer Heat

· · 2 min read

The Delhi Traffic Police has launched a pilot program to equip frontline officers with "AC Helmets" to mitigate severe heat exposure. This initiative is part of a wider summer relief plan, including refrigerated vans and roadside shelters, aimed at protecting personnel during brutal summer months.

The Delhi Traffic Police has initiated a pilot program to equip its frontline personnel with innovative "AC Helmets" as the capital grapples with increasingly severe summer temperatures. This trial, reported on May 26, 2026, aims to protect officers from extreme heat exposure while they manage traffic on some of Delhi's busiest thoroughfares.

Cooling Technology for Frontline Officers

The specially designed cooling helmets are part of a broader summer relief strategy. Each helmet operates on a rechargeable battery, providing four to five hours of continuous cooling on a single charge. Features include a digital battery display, adjustable cooling modes, and strategically placed ventilation openings engineered to enhance airflow and prevent heat buildup around the head.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Veer Singh, stationed at the bustling Chanakyapuri roundabout, is among the officers testing the new gear. Singh, who commutes daily from Shahdara and begins his shift at 4 AM, often faces intense exhaustion, dehydration, and discomfort during the summer months. He noted that the helmets offer "some relief during duty" from the oppressive heat and sweat.

Comprehensive Summer Relief Efforts

Beyond the AC helmets, the Delhi Traffic Police's summer relief plan includes several other measures:

  • Refrigerated refreshment vans distributing cold water, lemonade, and ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) across deployment zones.
  • Portable rechargeable fans for officers.
  • Additional roadside shelters providing respite from direct sunlight during long shifts.

Extra roadside booths have been installed at key locations such as Ten Murti Marg and Kartavya Path, allowing personnel to take short breaks while continuing to oversee traffic flow.

Trial Phase and Future Prospects

DCP (Traffic) Shobhit Saxena confirmed that six of these cooling helmets are currently undergoing trials within the New Delhi range. Officials report an encouraging response from the personnel using them. "We are collecting feedback from officers," Saxena stated, indicating that if the trial continues to yield positive results, more helmets will be procured for wider deployment across the force.

This initiative underscores the Delhi Traffic Police's commitment to prioritizing the well-being of its officers, who play a crucial role in maintaining urban mobility under challenging environmental conditions.
