Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has officially recommissioned its third runway, Runway 11R/29L, effective September 20, 2026. This significant upgrade is set to enhance the airport's operational efficiency, optimize aircraft movement, and bolster reliability, particularly during varied weather conditions.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the GMR-led consortium managing the airport, confirmed the runway's activation after the successful completion of an extensive rehabilitation program and receipt of all necessary regulatory approvals.
Key Upgrades and Enhancements
The rehabilitation project, which commenced in February 2026, involved a comprehensive overhaul of the runway and associated airside infrastructure. Key improvements include:
- Runway Resurfacing: Extensive strengthening and resurfacing works to ensure long-term durability and safety.
- Permanent Threshold Displacement: Adjustment of Runway 29L's threshold for improved operational parameters.
- New Rapid Exit Taxiway (RET Z1): Construction of a new taxiway designed to reduce runway occupancy time for landing aircraft, thereby increasing runway throughput.
- Advanced Lighting Systems: Upgrades to airfield ground lighting systems to enhance visibility and operational safety.
- Civil and Electrical Infrastructure: Pavement strengthening and improvements to associated civil and electrical infrastructure.
These enhancements are crucial for one of India's busiest aviation hubs, addressing the growing demands of air traffic and ensuring compliance with global aviation safety and infrastructure standards.

DIAL anticipates that the recommissioned third runway will play a pivotal role in supporting the airport's operational efficiency and accommodating future traffic growth. DIAL collaborated closely with key stakeholders, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Airports Authority of India (AAI), Air Traffic Control (ATC), and various airlines, throughout the project to ensure all safety, operational, and regulatory requirements were met before its operational debut.
