Crisil: India Inc Can Absorb 50 Bps Rate Hike Amid Strong Balance Sheets

· · 3 min read

Crisil Ratings assesses that Indian companies can manage a moderate interest rate increase, absorbing a 50 basis points hike due to robust balance sheets and low leverage. While most sectors are resilient, commercial real estate might see some impact.

Indian corporations are well-positioned to withstand a moderate increase in interest rates, with strong balance sheets and low leverage providing a significant buffer against tighter financial conditions, according to a recent assessment by Crisil Ratings. The agency concluded that a rate hike of up to 50 basis points (bps) would be largely manageable for India Inc, though some specific sectors could experience pressure.

Corporate Resilience Against Rate Hikes

Crisil's analysis indicates that the median gearing of rated companies stands at approximately 0.5, reflecting robust financial health. This strong foundation is expected to help companies absorb higher borrowing costs without significant deterioration in their credit profiles. Previous rate-hike cycles have shown limited impact on the credit health of various sectors, further supporting this outlook.

Impact on Interest Coverage

The rating agency's sensitivity analysis projected that a 25-basis-point rate hike would reduce median interest coverage by only about 10 basis points. In the event of a 50-basis-point increase, the reduction would be around 20 basis points. Under both scenarios, interest coverage is expected to remain healthy, hovering around 5.1 times for a 25-bps hike and 5.0 times for a 50-bps increase.

Sector-Specific Outlook

While the overall outlook for India Inc's ability to absorb rate hikes is positive, Crisil highlighted variations across sectors:

  • Infrastructure: These sectors are anticipated to remain broadly resilient. Strong debt-protection metrics, tariff pass-through mechanisms, and healthy demand, bolstered by ongoing government capital expenditure, are key supportive factors.
  • Commercial Real Estate: This sector could experience a moderate impact on debt-service coverage ratios in a 50-basis-point rate-hike scenario.

Banking Sector and Credit Growth

The potential for higher interest rates comes against a backdrop of sustained credit growth. Crisil projects bank credit growth of 14.5–15.5% in fiscal year 2027, with micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) and retail lending continuing to be primary drivers. Corporate credit growth is also expected to benefit from the ongoing substitution of bank loans by the bond market and increased utilization of working-capital limits. Banks are forecast to maintain stable credit profiles, supported by strong capitalization and resilient asset quality, with non-performing assets expected to remain range-bound.

Broader Economic Risks

Despite the corporate sector's robust position against moderate rate increases, Crisil continues to monitor broader economic risks. These include prolonged geopolitical tensions, potential supply-chain disruptions, and elevated crude prices, all of which could exert pressure on corporate cash flows. Furthermore, higher-than-expected inflation and interest rate increases could temper consumer demand, while weather-related stress extending into the Rabi season might affect rural incomes.

Overall, Crisil has maintained a stable credit-quality outlook for FY27, underpinned by strong corporate balance sheets, stable asset quality, and robust capitalization within the financial sector, complemented by government-led capital expenditure and policy initiatives.
