The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is embroiled in controversy surrounding its On-Screen Marking (OSM) system, following allegations from Class 12 students who claimed discrepancies between their original handwriting and the scanned copies of their answer sheets uploaded by the board.
Amidst the escalating concerns, Hyderabad-based Coempt Eduteck Pvt Ltd, the vendor responsible for the technical scanning process, is set to continue its operations for re-evaluation, despite facing criticism for its role in the initial OSM system rollout. Sources indicate that while Coempt will handle the scanning, the CBSE has taken steps to enhance security by transferring all answer-sheet data and records from Coempt's servers to its own for greater control and protection against potential cyber threats.
Student Access Issues and Extended Deadlines
Adding to the challenges, students have reported difficulties accessing their answer books and applying for verification and re-evaluation through the CBSE’s newly launched post-result services portal, which went live on June 2. In response to these issues, the board has extended the deadline for submitting applications for verification and re-evaluation of Class 12 answer sheets until June 7.
Concerns Over OSM System Rollout
The Delhi Parents Association (DPA) has voiced strong objections, alleging that the OSM system was implemented hastily without adequate preparation, teacher training, or proper feedback. Aprajita Gautam, president of the DPA, stated that the digital evaluation's trial run was conducted over a very short period with a limited number of teachers, primarily focusing on system load rather than comprehensive familiarization or practice.
Gautam further criticized the process, noting that many teachers, preoccupied with their primary academic responsibilities, could not dedicate sufficient time to practice or become proficient with the new system. “Whether they checked papers or practiced adequately was not given due attention,” she claimed.
Leadership Changes and Official Probe
In a significant development stemming from the controversy, CBSE chairman Rahul Singh and Secretary Himanshu Gupta were removed from their positions on Thursday. The central government has since established a one-member committee tasked with investigating the procurement of services for the OSM system by the educational board, aiming to address the systemic issues and allegations of impropriety.
