Vikram Shaw, a jhalmuri vendor from West Bengal, has come forward alleging he is receiving a barrage of threatening phone calls, some purportedly originating from Pakistan and Bangladesh. Shaw gained national attention after serving his iconic Bengali snack to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a pre-election visit to the state.
Allegations of International Threats
Shaw reported that the calls have been ongoing for several days, frequently coming from unidentified international numbers. He described callers using vulgar language, attempting to intimidate him, and issuing direct threats. "They are calling from Pakistan and threatening to blow me up with a bomb... Then another call comes from Bangladesh asking whether I am alive or not," Shaw recounted, emphasizing his distress.
The vendor stated he has simply disconnected the calls without engaging with the unknown individuals. The nature of the threats has raised concerns about his safety following his unexpected rise to public prominence.
From Local Vendor to Political Symbol
Shaw's encounter with Prime Minister Modi occurred ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections in Bengal. What began as a seemingly ordinary roadside interaction quickly evolved into a significant political talking point. The humble jhalmuri, a spicy puffed rice mixture popular across Bengal, became a symbolic element of the BJP's campaign narrative.
Following the Prime Minister's visit, Shaw's stall experienced a dramatic increase in foot traffic. Curious visitors, political supporters, and social media users flocked to his shop, transforming the local vendor into a widely recognized figure beyond West Bengal. Videos and photographs of Shaw serving the snack circulated extensively online, turning his once-local business into a point of national curiosity.
Prime Minister Modi himself referenced the moment in campaign speeches, delivering a memorable political punchline: "I ate jhalmuri, but TMC felt the jhal (spice)." This sudden attention, while boosting his business, appears to have also brought unwanted and dangerous attention to Vikram Shaw.
