Anshul Saigal: Indian Large-Cap Banks Poised for 50-60% Upside Rally

· · 2 min read

Anshul Saigal, founder and CIO of Sehgal Capital Advisors, forecasts a significant rally in India's large-cap stocks, particularly private sector banks. He believes leading banks could see 50-60% upside as valuations normalize over the next 6-7 months.

Anshul Saigal, the founder and Chief Investment Officer at Sehgal Capital Advisors, has identified compelling investment opportunities within India's large-cap market. After a period of underperformance for frontline stocks, Saigal believes that the valuation compression in key sectors, notably private sector banks, has created a substantial re-rating potential for investors over the coming six to seven months.

Private Sector Banks Offer Significant Upside

Saigal highlights large private sector banks as his clearest bullish call. He points out that the country's largest private bank is currently trading at approximately 10-11 times earnings and 1.5-2 times book value. This stands in stark contrast to its historical valuation range of 4-5 times book value. Despite some stock-specific issues impacting sentiment, Saigal asserts that the core 'sales machine' of these banks remains robust and unimpaired.

He estimates that even a partial normalization of valuations – for example, a return to 2.5-3 times book value – could translate into a substantial 50-60% upside from current levels for a leading private sector bank. This optimistic outlook is rooted in a broader market perspective where Indian valuations have become more reasonable, earnings growth is improving, and investors are likely to rotate towards segments where pessimism has exceeded fundamental realities.

Beyond Banking: New-Age Leaders and Infrastructure

While banking stocks are a primary focus, Saigal also sees merit in select new-age businesses demonstrating consistent market leadership. He cited 'Eternal' as an example of a company that continues to execute better than market expectations, suggesting that superior performance will eventually be reflected in its valuation. Additionally, he expressed a constructive view on infrastructure, specifically mentioning that parts of the Adani pack appear 'very, very interesting on valuations,' despite the segment's susceptibility to shifting sentiment and policy concerns.

A Broader Market Transition

Saigal's analysis underscores a significant transition in the market, indicating that attractive opportunities are no longer confined to niche small-cap stories. Large-cap stocks, particularly those with enduring earnings durability but sharply reset valuations, now present a more favorable risk-reward profile. However, he clarified that while these large-cap opportunities are significant, his firm's primary capital allocation strategy remains anchored to its established small-cap focus.

“There is tremendous opportunity on the large-cap space as well,” Saigal noted, emphasizing the expanding scope for investors.
