Women Reshaping India's Male-Dominated Logistics Sector

· · 2 min read

Women are increasingly taking on roles from ground operations to boardrooms in India's logistics sector. Despite facing deep-rooted biases and systemic barriers, their contributions are driving significant transformation in the industry.

The presence of women is steadily growing across all levels of India's logistics sector, from warehouse floors to executive suites. This shift signifies a crucial evolution for an industry traditionally characterized by male dominance. However, truly transforming this historically male-dominated industry demands more than just shifting attitudes; it necessitates addressing fundamental infrastructural and cultural challenges that deter women's participation.

Overcoming Deep-Rooted Biases

One of the most persistent hurdles women face is pervasive gender bias. Professional environments, even at the highest levels, can sometimes reveal underlying prejudices. For instance, Bhairavi Jani, Executive Director of SCA Group of Companies, recounted an interview where a CFO candidate veered from professional discussion to suggest she should get married. Her sharp retort – "You are interviewing for the CFO role, not for the job of my husband" – underscores the kind of irrelevant and inappropriate comments women in leadership still encounter.

Such anecdotes highlight that while women are proving their capabilities, the professional landscape often requires them to navigate outdated societal expectations alongside their job responsibilities. These biases can manifest in various forms, from hiring practices to promotion opportunities, creating an uneven playing field.

Addressing Systemic Barriers

Beyond individual biases, systemic issues contribute to the underrepresentation of women in logistics. These "basic conditions" include a lack of adequate safety measures, insufficient access to proper sanitation facilities, and limited secure transportation options, especially for roles requiring travel or late hours. Addressing these infrastructural gaps is vital for creating an environment where women feel safe and supported to pursue careers in the sector.

The Push for Inclusivity

For the logistics sector to fully leverage the talent pool of women, a concerted effort is required. This involves not only challenging perceptions but also implementing tangible changes in workplace policies and infrastructure. Companies must prioritize creating inclusive cultures, offering flexible work arrangements where possible, and investing in safety and support systems tailored to women's needs.

By actively working to dismantle biases and improve fundamental conditions, India's logistics sector can unlock new efficiencies, foster innovation, and build a more representative and resilient workforce, ultimately benefiting the entire economy.
