Amit Shah Urges Cooperative Banks: Modernize, Be Transparent or Risk Being Left Behind

· · 3 min read

Union Minister Amit Shah called on urban cooperative banks (UCBs) to adopt transparency, technology, and modern services. Speaking at the NUCFDC inauguration, he stressed their vital role in fostering self-employment and ensuring depositor trust.

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has issued a clear directive to urban cooperative banks (UCBs): embrace transparency, adopt modern technology, train staff, and enhance customer services, or face obsolescence. Speaking at the inauguration of the new office for the National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation (NUCFDC) on Saturday, Shah underscored the critical need for UCBs to remain competitive in India's evolving financial landscape.

NUCFDC to Spearhead Modernization

Shah highlighted the pivotal role of the newly formed NUCFDC, describing it as a vital umbrella organization for UCBs. He stated that the body would provide essential technical support, guide banks through Reserve Bank of India (RBI) compliance requirements, and disseminate information on the latest banking sector improvements. Furthermore, NUCFDC is expected to offer crucial software solutions, such as "Mule Hunter," to aid UCBs in their operations.

The Minister emphasized that the cooperative sector stands to gain significantly from increased transparency, enabling UCBs to compete effectively with larger commercial banks.

UCBs: Pillars of Self-Employment and Local Economy

Shah asserted that achieving a prosperous India necessitates prosperity for every Indian, a goal he believes is heavily reliant on a robust system of self-employment. He argued that while capital markets have a role, cooperative banks are uniquely positioned to fulfill this initiative, especially at the grassroots level.

"All areas related to employment, self-employment, be it a small shopkeeper or a small businessman, be it MSME, be it a self-help group for women, or even a small loan for middle class people, large banks can't fulfill it. But, it is the UCB in the taluka place that works to meet the needs of all these people," Shah pointed.

He noted that UCBs are instrumental in catering to the financial needs of small shopkeepers, businesses, MSMEs, women's self-help groups, and middle-class individuals seeking small loans—segments often underserved by larger banking institutions.

Bridging Perception Gaps and Ensuring Depositor Safety

Shah also addressed the existing perception gap between the RBI and UCBs, expressing confidence that the central bank has consistently supported the cooperative sector whenever it has demonstrated proactive engagement. He acknowledged the RBI's responsibility as a regulator to ensure the smooth functioning of banks and safeguard depositors' money.

In line with this, Shah urged all 1,400 urban cooperative banks to join the NUCFDC, reinforcing the idea that collective participation is crucial for the sector's strength and adherence to regulatory standards, ultimately protecting public trust and funds.
