The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) is actively pursuing key government positions, including the Deputy Chief Minister's role for its leader, Thol Thirumavalavan, as part of a potential alliance with actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the new government in Tamil Nadu.
During a virtual meeting held on Friday evening, chaired by Thirumavalavan, VCK leaders discussed a comprehensive power-sharing arrangement. This included securing a Cabinet berth for each of its two newly elected members following the April 23 Assembly elections. The discussions also covered crucial policy demands and the party's strategic next steps regarding its support for a TVK-led administration.
VCK's Demands for Power-Sharing and Policy
According to sources within the pro-Dalit party, the VCK is eyeing two to three significant posts should it join the new government. Beyond ministerial roles, the party emphasized the continuation of commissions previously established to investigate caste killings. Additionally, the VCK is pressing for robust quota protections in promotions for Dalits within government employment.
Amid intense speculation surrounding Thirumavalavan's potential elevation to Deputy Chief Minister, VCK Deputy General Secretary Vanni Arasu commented to reporters that the party's stance on power-sharing reflects the broader sentiments of the people. He refrained, however, from elaborating further on the specifics of the negotiations.
Potential Candidacy and Political Landscape
Another point of discussion within the VCK meeting was the possibility of Thirumavalavan contesting from the Tiruchirappalli East constituency. This scenario could arise if Vijay, who reportedly won from two constituencies, chooses to vacate Tiruchirappalli East and retain his Perambur seat in Chennai.
The VCK has publicly expressed its opposition to the imposition of Governor's rule in Tamil Nadu, advocating instead for the TVK, which it believes holds the people's mandate, to form the government. Vanni Arasu indicated that the party's definitive decision on supporting the TVK-led government is expected to be announced later today.
These developments unfold as the VCK carefully evaluates its options, balancing power-sharing aspirations with policy priorities and potential electoral opportunities for its leadership.
