Ola Electric Expands into Utility-Scale Battery Storage with Mahashakti Launch

Ola Electric will launch its Mahashakti utility-scale battery storage platform on August 15, diversifying its in-house cell business beyond EVs. The Made-in-India system targets commercial, industrial, and grid infrastructure applications, tapping into India's growing clean energy transition needs.

Ola Electric, led by Bhavish Aggarwal, is poised to introduce Mahashakti, a new utility-scale battery storage platform, on August 15. This strategic move marks a significant expansion for the company, moving beyond electric vehicle batteries to enter India's rapidly growing energy storage market.

Expanding Beyond EVs with Mahashakti

Mahashakti has been designed and manufactured in India to address critical applications, including the integration of renewable energy sources, providing robust industrial power, enhancing grid infrastructure, and supporting data centers. It represents a key step in Ola's strategy to diversify its in-house cell business.

The Mahashakti platform complements Ola's existing Shakti system, which is tailored for residential and small business backup power solutions. While Shakti serves homes and smaller commercial entities, Mahashakti specifically targets larger commercial, industrial, and utility-scale projects, enabling Ola to cover a broad spectrum of energy storage demands across the value chain.

Scaling Production and Market Vision

The launch of Mahashakti coincides with Ola's aggressive scaling of its cell manufacturing operations. The company's Gigafactory is projected to be operational with a capacity of 6 GWh by September. This substantial production capability will support both Ola's electric vehicle division and external customers in the burgeoning energy storage sector.

India's energy storage market is anticipated to grow rapidly over the next decade. Driven by increasing renewable energy capacity and the imperative to maintain grid reliability, estimates suggest the country will require over 400 GWh of energy storage by 2032. Ola views this as a major long-term growth opportunity for domestic manufacturers.

Strategic Partnerships Bolster Deployment

Ahead of Mahashakti's debut, Ola announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Axis Energy for the potential deployment of up to 20 GWh of battery storage by 2032. This agreement is described as one of the largest announced domestic deployments of indigenous battery storage technology, positioning Axis Energy as an anchor customer for Ola's utility-scale offerings.

Broader Cell Technology Applications

Beyond electric vehicles and stationary energy storage, Ola is exploring diverse applications for its in-house cell technology. The company's 4680 nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) Bharat Cell is already deployed in its performance electric two-wheeler portfolio. Additionally, its 46100 lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell has secured Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification, ready for integration into mass-market electric scooters where lower battery costs are crucial for affordability.

Ola has also signed MOUs covering the use of its domestically manufactured battery cells in defence and unmanned aerial vehicle applications, near-space constellation platforms, and various other industrial uses, further broadening its potential market reach.
