· · 2 min read

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate Srinath holds a significant lead of over 15,800 votes in Thoothukudi during the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election counting. Incumbent DMK leader P. Geetha Jeevan trails as results continue to unfold.

Counting for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is underway, with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate Srinath establishing a substantial lead in the Thoothukudi constituency. As per the latest trends, Srinath is ahead by 15,875 votes against the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate, P. Geetha Jeevan.

The Thoothukudi seat, which went to polls on April 23, is experiencing a closely watched contest due to its political importance and a diverse field of candidates. Srinath's early advantage marks a potential shift in the constituency's political landscape, historically a stronghold for the DMK.

Historical Context of Thoothukudi Elections

The Thoothukudi constituency has a history of competitive elections. In the 2021 Assembly elections, DMK's P. Geetha Jeevan secured a decisive victory, defeating AIADMK’s Sdr Vijayaseelan by a margin of 50,310 votes. Vijayaseelan had garnered 42,004 votes, while other parties, including Naam Tamilar Katchi, remained distant contenders. This current election, however, suggests a notable change in voter sentiment, with TVK making significant inroads.

Other Candidates in the Fray

Beyond the two leading candidates, several others are contesting the Thoothukudi seat. These include Chellapandian S.T. of the AIADMK, Babu P. (Independent), Dhinakaran S.T.R.M. (Independent), and Jacob Devadoss Abisheak R. from Naam Tamilar Katchi. All these candidates are currently trailing, with no immediate signs of closing the gap with the frontrunner.

Financial Disclosures of Candidates

Candidate disclosures reveal significant differences in financial backgrounds among the contestants. DMK’s P. Geetha Jeevan has declared assets worth over ₹27 crore and liabilities exceeding ₹8 crore, positioning her among the wealthiest candidates. AIADMK’s Chellapandian S.T. follows with assets valued over ₹22 crore. In contrast, TVK’s Srinath has declared assets of approximately ₹3.35 crore with liabilities around ₹56 lakh, reflecting a more moderate financial profile.

Other candidates, including independents and those from smaller parties, have reported comparatively modest asset bases, highlighting the wide financial disparity within the electoral field. While the final results will be declared later today by the Election Commission, Srinath's sustained lead places him in a strong position to win the Thoothukudi seat, potentially signaling a broader shift in the region's political dynamics.
