Trump's 80th Birthday: White House Hosts Controversial $60M UFC Event

· · 2 min read

President Donald Trump marked his 80th birthday with a controversial UFC fight card on the White House South Lawn. The lavish event, costing an estimated $60 million, faced criticism for its timing amid a global conflict and rising inflation.

President Donald Trump celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday with an unprecedented and controversial Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event held on the White House South Lawn. The spectacle, dubbed "Freedom 250," was planned to coincide with both his milestone birthday and the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

A $60 Million Spectacle Amidst Global Tensions

The event drew significant attention and criticism for its timing and immense cost. Held against the backdrop of a three-month-old war with Iran—a conflict widely unpopular in the United States and disruptive to global oil markets—and amidst rising inflation, the decision to host a lavish fight night sparked widespread debate.

According to a court filing by the National Park Service, which oversees the South Lawn, the construction of the arena alone required more than $60 million in funding and tens of thousands of hours of labor. This considerable expenditure added to the public discourse surrounding the event.

A Partnership Forged Over Decades

The White House UFC card was the latest chapter in a long-standing relationship between Donald Trump and UFC CEO Dana White, a partnership stretching back 25 years. This association has brought personal, political, and financial benefits to both men.

White's inaugural card as UFC president in 2001 was notably held at the Trump Taj Mahal. Throughout his presidency, Trump has attended four UFC events, often making grand entrances to rock music and cheers, mirroring the fighters themselves. Dana White has also been a visible supporter, introducing Trump at two Republican National Conventions.

The Fight Card and Forecast

The seven-fight card exclusively featured male fighters and was headlined by two highly anticipated title bouts. Brazil's Alex Pereira was set to challenge France's Ciryl Gane for the interim UFC heavyweight title. In the lightweight division, Spanish-Georgian champion Ilia Topuria was scheduled to face interim champion Justin Gaethje, one of only two Americans holding a share of a UFC championship belt.

Despite strong thunderstorms and heavy lightning disrupting a promotional event at the Lincoln Memorial on Friday, and an unfavorable forecast for Sunday evening, Dana White affirmed that the show would proceed regardless of the weather. The event was broadcast live on Paramount+.
