· · 3 min read

HDFC Bank has named Jimmy Tata as its new Executive Director for a three-year term, pending approval from the Reserve Bank of India. Tata, currently the bank's Chief Credit Officer, brings over 35 years of banking experience to the role.

HDFC Bank has announced the appointment of Jimmy Tata as a Whole-time Director, designated as Executive Director, for a three-year period. This significant move, aimed at enhancing the bank's leadership and strategic oversight, is subject to the crucial approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Who is Jimmy Tata?

Jimmy Tata currently serves as HDFC Bank’s Chief Credit Officer, a position he has held with distinction. He possesses an impressive career spanning over 35 years in the banking and financial services sector. Academically, Tata holds a Master of Financial Management from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management and is a Chartered Financial Analyst from the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India.

His journey with HDFC Bank began in 1994, where he joined as a Relationship Manager in the Corporate Banking Department, eventually rising to head the department. Prior to his current role, Tata also served as the Chief Risk Officer for HDFC Bank, taking over that responsibility in June 2013. His extensive experience includes a professional start in 1987 as a consultant with Strategic Consultants Pvt Ltd, followed by a role at Apple Industries Ltd where he headed its Wholesale Leasing and Hire Purchase Division.

Beyond his commitments at HDFC Bank, Tata contributes his expertise to the boards of International Asset Reconstruction Co. Pvt. Ltd (IARC) and HDB Financial Services Ltd. He is also a trustee of the HDB Employees Welfare Trust.

Strategic Board Expansion and Other Appointments

The appointment of Jimmy Tata comes as HDFC Bank's board approved the creation of an additional Whole-time Director position, bringing the total number of such directors to four, alongside the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. This expansion is designed to foster “sharper synergy and oversight,” particularly across its subsidiaries, and to reinforce its succession planning framework.

The effective date and remuneration for Tata's new role will commence upon receiving the RBI's green light. The bank will also seek shareholder approval for this appointment at a later stage.

In a separate but related development, the board also approved the reappointment of V Srinivasa Rangan as Whole-time Director, also designated as Executive Director, for a one-year term from November 23, 2026, to November 22, 2027, subject to the necessary regulatory approvals.

Furthermore, HDFC Bank has submitted the names of two candidates to the RBI for the critical posts of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, along with proposed remuneration packages for a three-year tenure. The identities of these candidates remain undisclosed, awaiting RBI approval.
