Trump Cites India's Voter ID Rule to Advocate for 'SAVE America Act'

· · 2 min read

US President Trump cited India's stringent voter identification system, requiring photo ID for 646 million voters, to advocate for his 'SAVE America Act.' The proposed legislation seeks to enforce stricter photo ID and proof-of-citizenship rules for US elections.

US President Donald Trump has pointed to India's robust electoral process, particularly its mandatory photo identification for voters, as a model for proposed changes to American election laws. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump highlighted a question he attributed to India's Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, regarding how elections could be conducted in the US without valid photo IDs.

India's Electoral System as a Precedent

Trump emphasized the sheer scale and procedural rigor of India's most recent general election. He noted that out of 646 million voters, less than one percent cast their ballots by mail, and every single voter was required to present a valid photo identity document. This comparison serves as a cornerstone for his argument that the United States should adopt similar strict requirements.

The 'SAVE America Act' Proposal

Following his comparison, President Trump issued a direct call to action, urging Congress to pass the 'SAVE America Act.' This proposed legislation aims to significantly tighten voter identification requirements and introduce proof-of-citizenship conditions for participation in US elections. The act represents a central component of his broader agenda to reform American voting procedures.

Ambassadorial Endorsement

The US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, publicly backed President Trump's position on X (formerly Twitter). Ambassador Gor affirmed Trump's characterization of India's electoral system as "absolutely correct," reiterating the figures concerning India's voter turnout and its photo ID mandate. He also joined the President in calling for the immediate passage of the 'SAVE America Act' by Congress.

"President Donald J. Trump is absolutely correct! 646 MILLION voters, every single one required an ID in India’s last election. Congress should pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT!"

— Ambassador Sergio Gor
