Consumers in major Indian cities saw stable prices for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) on August 18. While commercial LPG rates experienced a slight reduction earlier this month, household cooking gas prices have held steady for over a month.
The stability comes amid growing concerns about energy security, particularly due to geopolitical uncertainties in West Asia. These concerns are amplified by a significant year-on-year decline in LPG consumption, which fell over 16 percent last month to 2.35 million tonnes. This drop has pushed households and industries towards alternative fuels like PNG, biomass, and kerosene.

Government Actions to Enhance Fuel Security
In response to supply vulnerabilities highlighted by the West Asia conflict, the Indian government is implementing strategic measures to bolster its energy security. A key initiative involves diversifying LPG imports; state-run oil companies have been directed to source at least 15 percent of India’s LPG imports for 2027 from the United States, with plans to potentially increase this to 25 percent.
Furthermore, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry has, for the first time, established maximum LPG production targets for individual public and private sector refineries and upstream companies. An order issued on August 13 set combined production potential at 63,810 tonnes per day across 21 entities. This target more than doubles India's domestic LPG output from the financial year ending March 31, 2026, and represents approximately 70 percent of the nation's daily consumption.
These production limits will primarily apply during periods of supply constraints. Reliance Industries Ltd.'s older refinery has been assigned the largest share of this planned output, with a mandate to produce up to 18,000 tonnes of LPG daily. India consumed 33.2 million tonnes of LPG in 2025-26, averaging about 91,000 tonnes per day, with domestic production accounting for 35,900 tonnes daily and imports covering the remaining 58,400 tonnes.
