West Bengal's newly formed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, has swiftly moved to assign portfolios to its first Cabinet ministers. On Saturday, five newly sworn-in members received crucial departmental responsibilities, marking the administration's initial steps towards governance in the state.
Key Cabinet Appointments and Portfolios
Chief Minister Adhikari has entrusted familiar party figures with significant roles. Here are the initial portfolio allocations:
- Dilip Ghosh: A prominent BJP leader and former state president, Ghosh has been assigned the vital portfolios of Rural Development, Panchayats, and Animal Resources. His extensive political experience is expected to bolster these grassroots-focused departments.
- Ashok Kirtania: The MLA from Bangaon Uttar, representing the influential Matua community, has been appointed to a ministerial position. His specific portfolio is currently awaiting official confirmation.
- Khudiram Tudu: Hailing from the Jungle Mahal region and a tribal leader from Ranibandh, Tudu will head the Backward Class Welfare department, signaling the government's commitment to tribal representation and welfare.
- Agnimitra Paul: The sole woman in the new Cabinet, Paul brings a unique background as a fashion designer turned politician. She will oversee the Women and Child Welfare department, having previously led the BJP Mahila Morcha in West Bengal.
- Nisith Pramanik: A former Union Minister of State, Pramanik has been given charge of North Bengal Development, Sports, and Youth Welfare. His appointment reflects a focus on regional development and engagement with the state's youth.
Administrative Leadership and Initial Policy Directives
Alongside the Cabinet appointments, the government also named its new administrative head. Manoj Agarwal, a 1990-batch IAS officer who previously served as West Bengal's Chief Electoral Officer, has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary. The incumbent, Dushyant Nariala, will now serve as Principal Resident Commissioner in New Delhi.
During its inaugural Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Adhikari's government announced several key policy decisions aimed at aligning the state with central government initiatives and enhancing governance. These include:
- The rollout of several central government schemes previously not implemented in West Bengal, such as Ayushman Bharat, PM Jan Arogya Yojana, PM Kisan-related insurance, PM SHRI, the Vishwakarma Scheme, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and Ujjwala Yojana.
- Alignment with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, a new legal framework.
- A five-year increase in the age limit for government job eligibility.
- Mandatory participation of IAS officers in central training programmes.
- Stricter implementation of census directives across the state.
- Prioritizing faster land allocation to the Border Security Force (BSF) to enhance border security in West Bengal.
These early actions underscore the new administration's intent to implement its agenda swiftly and integrate West Bengal more closely with national policy frameworks.
