The Indian government has agreed to a comprehensive discussion in Parliament regarding the recent student protests, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah expected to deliver the government's response. This decision comes amidst a prolonged two-week deadlock that has significantly disrupted the functioning of both Houses of Parliament.
For nearly two weeks, Opposition parties have repeatedly demanded a statement from Home Minister Shah concerning police action against students during a protest march towards Parliament on July 20. These demands have led to repeated disruptions and adjournments in parliamentary proceedings.
The agreement to hold a debate was reached during a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC), chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed the government's readiness for a detailed discussion on the student movement and related issues.
Rijiju later urged Opposition MPs to allow the Home Minister to speak without interruption once the debate begins. He emphasized that the government is prepared for a "threadbare discussion" on the matter, asking members to listen to Shah's reply before creating any disturbances.
While the government's offer addresses one of the Opposition's key demands, Opposition parties have made it clear they also seek a discussion on another significant issue: alleged donation theft linked to the Ram Mandir trust in Ayodhya. Congress leaders, including chief whip Gaurav Gogoi, stated that both the student protests and the Ram Mandir allegations are top priorities and should not be treated as mutually exclusive.
The Opposition's demand for a statement from Home Minister Shah regarding the police action during the July 20 protest march has been a non-negotiable point, previously highlighted by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.
