Tensions flared in Ranchi as hundreds of students, led by the JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch and student leader Devendra Nath Mahato, launched an indefinite hunger strike and marched toward the Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha. Their protest highlights widespread allegations of paper leaks and systemic irregularities in competitive examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).
Students Demand Accountability and Reforms
The protestors are demanding immediate structural reforms within the state's examination system and strict accountability for those responsible for the alleged flaws. Their grievances center on ensuring a fair and transparent recruitment process for job aspirants across Jharkhand.
As the students advanced toward the Assembly, police deployed heavy barricading near Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium and along the march route. Officers subsequently used force to disperse the crowds, an action that quickly drew sharp criticism and threatened to overshadow the ongoing Assembly session.
Rahul Gandhi Slams Use of Force
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, strongly condemned the police crackdown on the protesting youth. He asserted that such violence and severe police measures have no place in a democratic society. Gandhi emphasized that every government must listen to student concerns and work towards reforming the education system, advocating for meaningful dialogue rather than suppressing grievances.
Despite being part of the ruling coalition in Jharkhand alongside the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the Congress party reiterated its support for the student community. The party affirmed its commitment to pushing for an uncompromised and fair recruitment process in the state.
Student representatives have declared that their hunger strike will continue until the state government announces concrete steps to address the systemic flaws in recruitment exams and guarantees equitable opportunities for all job seekers.
