Suhana Gill, a 20-year-old of Punjabi origin, has made history by becoming the youngest-ever city councillor in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Gill officially took her oath of office on November 2, 2026, joining the newly elected Surrey City Council led by Mayor Doug McCallum.
A Young Voice in Local Politics
Born and raised in Surrey, Gill completed her high school education at the age of 15. She went on to study political science at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), earning her bachelor’s degree by 19. Her dedication to public affairs and youth advocacy began long before her council bid, establishing her as a significant young voice in Surrey’s civic life.
Gill's professional experience includes working with the House of Commons and contributing to CBC News panels. Her background in the non-profit sector and real estate also provided her with a deep understanding of critical urban challenges, particularly the housing affordability crisis impacting young families in the city.
Campaign Promises and Community Focus
Gill contested the October 17, 2026, municipal election as a candidate for the Safe Surrey Coalition. Her campaign platform resonated with many residents, focusing on key issues such as affordability, infrastructure development, public safety, improved transportation, and creating more opportunities for young people in Surrey's rapidly growing population.
She consistently advocated for a more responsive municipal administration, emphasizing the need to address concerns affecting students, young professionals, and young families directly. Gill firmly believes that young residents are not merely future voters but should play a meaningful role in shaping decisions that will impact their lives for decades to come. Affordable housing and enhanced public transportation were central to her vision, positioning her as a fresh perspective in municipal governance.
