Indian Equities Extend Winning Streak
Indian equity indices concluded a robust week on Wednesday, marking their fifth consecutive session of gains. The benchmark 30-share BSE Sensex advanced 383.55 points (0.50%) to close at 77,301.40. This recent surge brings the Sensex's total gain over the past five sessions to an impressive 4,055.37 points.
Similarly, the NSE Nifty index climbed 149.75 points (0.63%) to settle at 23,960.60, having accumulated 1,261.75 points over the same five-session period. Broader markets outshone the benchmarks, with Nifty Midcap100 rising 1.55% and Nifty Smallcap100 surging 2%, reflecting improved risk appetite among investors.
Key Drivers Behind the Rally
The positive sentiment on Dalal Street was driven by a confluence of global and domestic factors. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, highlighted the impact of the US mid-term election outcome, which fostered expectations of more stable trade and tariff policies. This development is anticipated to encourage foreign institutional investor (FII) flows into emerging markets like India.
Domestically, optimism surrounding potential tax relief in the upcoming Union Budget, better-than-expected quarterly earnings from corporations, and resilient festive consumption added significant momentum to the rally. Ajit Mishra, SVP (Research) at Religare Broking, noted that continued foreign investor buying and encouraging domestic earnings also provided crucial support to market sentiment.
Sectoral Performance and Rupee Strength
Sectoral performance remained largely positive, with most indices closing in the green. Media, realty, and metal stocks led the gains, while the Nifty IT index was the sole exception, ending lower. Meanwhile, the Indian rupee demonstrated strength for the fourth consecutive session, gaining 10 paise to close at 94.64 against the US dollar.
Nandish Shah, Deputy Vice-President at HDFC Securities, attributed the rupee's appreciation to a softer dollar index and lower crude oil prices following the US mid-term election results. Declining bond yields and an overall improvement in risk appetite further contributed to the domestic currency's gains.
Investor Wealth Soars
The five-session rally translated into a substantial increase in investor wealth. The total market capitalization (m-cap) of BSE-listed companies rose by approximately ₹6.65 lakh crore on Wednesday alone, reaching ₹493.44 lakh crore. Over the past five trading sessions, investor wealth has collectively surged by an impressive ₹20.81 lakh crore.
Nifty's Technical Outlook
From a technical perspective, Shah of HDFC Securities indicated that the Nifty index is approaching its 200-day simple moving average (SMA), positioned at 24,003. A decisive close above this level would be a significant technical development, marking the first such instance since February 26, 2026. A sustained move above 24,000 could open the door for the next resistance zone near 24,375, while immediate support has shifted higher to 23,700.
