Ladakh Directs Sonam Wangchuk's HIAL School to Halt Operations Amid High Court Case

· · 2 min read

The Ladakh administration has ordered the Desert Flower School in Leh, founded by Sonam Wangchuk's Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL), to cease all activities. This directive comes as the school reportedly began classes without necessary approvals, and a related matter is pending before the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

The administration in Ladakh has issued a directive to the Desert Flower School in Leh, an institution established by innovator Sonam Wangchuk's Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL), mandating an immediate halt to all its operations. This order will remain in effect until the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh delivers its final judgment on a matter concerning HIAL.

The instruction was conveyed via a notice dated November 1, issued by the tehsildar's office in Leh. It was specifically addressed to Gitanjali J Angmo, who serves as the co-founder and CEO of HIAL and is also Wangchuk's wife.

Reasons for the Directive

According to the notice, the administration received information indicating that classes and other activities had commenced at Desert Flower School, located in Phyang, Leh, without the requisite consent, clearances, or approvals from the competent authorities. The notice also referenced a communication from September 22, in which Angmo had sought a 'no objection certificate' for proposed members of the school's managing committee.

The Desert Flower School operates within the broader ecosystem of HIAL. The Ladakh administration underscored that a matter involving HIAL is currently sub judice before the High Court.

Maintaining Status Quo

In light of the ongoing court proceedings, the tehsildar advised HIAL and Angmo against taking any further actions related to the functioning or commencement of activities at the school. This moratorium is to be observed until the high court reaches a final decision or issues subsequent directions. The notice also emphasized the strict maintenance of the status quo to avoid any actions that could prejudice the case pending before the high court.

The administration's directive highlights its commitment to ensuring all institutions operate with proper regulatory compliance, especially when legal proceedings are underway.
