Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC), accusing the ruling party in West Bengal of orchestrating a "reign of terror" following the killing of party worker Debdeep Chatterjee in Asansol. Gandhi's strong remarks came after the incident, which occurred post-election, sparking widespread condemnation.
Gandhi Condemns 'Reign of Terror'
In a public statement, Rahul Gandhi expressed his deepest condolences to Debdeep Chatterjee's grieving family, calling the murder by "TMC-affiliated thugs" utterly reprehensible. He asserted that West Bengal is currently experiencing a "TMC's reign of terror" rather than a functioning democracy. Gandhi specifically highlighted a disturbing pattern of "intimidating, attacking, and eliminating opposing voices after votes are cast" as a defining characteristic of the TMC's political conduct.
While making these accusations, Gandhi notably did not directly name Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He emphasized that the Congress party's politics has always been rooted in non-violence and adherence to the Constitution, a legacy he pledged to uphold.
Demands for Justice and Accountability
Gandhi issued a clear set of demands: the immediate arrest of all those responsible for Chatterjee's death, the imposition of the harshest possible punishment, and the provision of full security and compensation for the victim's family. He vowed that the Congress would not yield to a political culture that he believes stains India's tradition of non-violence, promising that "justice will be done."
The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee echoed Gandhi's sentiments, condemning the killing as a "brutal" act. The state unit described the incident as indicative of a severe breakdown of law and order within West Bengal. They reported that Debdeep Chatterjee, a supporter of Asansol North Congress candidate Prasenjit Puitandi, was attacked and beaten by individuals linked to the ruling All India Trinamool Congress, succumbing to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Concerns Over Post-Poll Violence
The Congress party further raised serious questions about the safety of opposition workers in the state, pointing to the incident as part of a "deeply disturbing pattern of political intimidation and vendetta" in the post-poll period. They also claimed that no First Information Report (FIR) had been registered at the time of their statement, which they cited as a sign of "administrative apathy." The party demanded a fair, impartial, and time-bound investigation into the matter.
This escalating political tension comes just days before the second phase of polling in West Bengal. Nationally, the Congress and the Trinamool Congress are allies within the INDIA bloc, but they are contesting against each other independently in the state elections, further complicating the political landscape.
