India vs Afghanistan 1st T20I in Delhi Confirmed for Sept 13 Despite BRICS Summit

· · 2 min read

The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has confirmed the first T20I between India and Afghanistan will proceed on September 13 at Arun Jaitley Stadium. This decision comes despite earlier requests from Delhi Traffic Police to reschedule due to the coinciding BRICS Summit.

The inaugural Twenty20 International (T20I) match between India and Afghanistan is set to take place as scheduled on September 13 at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) made the announcement on Thursday, putting an end to speculation surrounding the fixture.

DDCA Confirms Match Amid Summit Security

Earlier, the Delhi Traffic Police had raised concerns and requested the DDCA to consider rescheduling the match. Their apprehension stemmed from the extensive security and traffic management requirements anticipated for the high-profile BRICS Summit, which is also scheduled to be held in the national capital around the same time.

However, following a meeting, the DDCA received assurances from the Delhi Traffic Police regarding the necessary support and arrangements to manage both events concurrently. “India–Afghanistan 1st T20I on 13 September at Arun Jaitley Stadium will go ahead as scheduled,” the DDCA stated on X, confirming that no postponement would occur.

BRICS Summit Poses Logistical Challenges

The BRICS Summit is expected to draw numerous international delegations, necessitating heightened security protocols, movement restrictions, and significant traffic diversions across Delhi. The cricket match, poised to attract a large number of spectators to central Delhi, presented an additional logistical challenge for authorities.

The police’s initial request was a precautionary measure to mitigate potential traffic congestion and security strains during a period of intense activity. Despite these concerns, the DDCA's confirmation indicates successful coordination to ensure both the summit and the match can proceed safely.
