Mumbai Indians, the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, have officially named former West Indies captain Kieron Pollard as their new head coach. The franchise confirmed the significant appointment on October 24, 2026, marking a new chapter in Pollard's extensive 16-year association with the team.
Pollard, who previously served as the Mumbai Indians' batting coach, brings a wealth of experience in T20 cricket and an intimate understanding of the team's culture and dynamics. His elevation to the top coaching role underscores the franchise's commitment to continuity and leveraging internal talent.
Ambani Welcomes Pollard's Leadership
Nita M. Ambani, co-owner of Mumbai Indians, expressed her strong support for the decision, highlighting Pollard's long-standing contributions to the team.
"Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has become an integral part of our family. As a player, he gave us many unforgettable moments, and as a coach, he has continued to share his experience, passion and deep understanding of the game," Ambani stated.
Ambani further conveyed her confidence in Pollard's ability to lead, noting his understanding of what it means to represent Mumbai Indians. "I am confident that he will bring the same commitment, belief and determination to this role. I wish him every success as he leads the team into its next chapter," she added.
Kieron Pollard's Reaction to New Role
Reacting to his appointment as head coach, Kieron Pollard described the opportunity as a profound honor.
"It is an honour to take on the role of Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me," Pollard said.
He extended his gratitude to Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani, and the entire franchise for their trust. Pollard also expressed his eagerness to collaborate with the players and support staff to build on the team's storied legacy, foster talent development, and deliver more reasons for the 'Paltan' (fanbase) to celebrate.
Strengthening the Coaching Setup
The appointment of Kieron Pollard as Head Coach reflects Mumbai Indians' strategic focus on maintaining a strong team culture and developing players through experienced leadership. His dual perspective as a former player and coach in modern T20 cricket equips him with both tactical knowledge and familiarity with the high expectations of the franchise. Mumbai Indians have historically been one of the most successful teams in the IPL, securing championship titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.
