NEW DELHI – Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a strong attack on the Centre during a Lok Sabha debate, condemning the alleged use of force against students demonstrating over examination irregularities. Speaking on the Public Examinations Bill, Gandhi questioned the necessity of deploying tear gas, lathis, water cannons, and pellet guns against the young protesters, asking, “Were they terrorists?”
Gandhi directly challenged the government to identify who ordered the crackdown, implying either Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Union Home Minister Amit Shah. She asserted that the entire nation sought answers regarding the alleged excessive force, which included claims of women students being subjected to harsh treatment.
Government Accused of Suppressing Youth Voices
The Wayanad MP accused the government of treating students like criminals rather than addressing their genuine concerns. “Why are you afraid of the youth of this country? Why are you afraid of their voice? Who gave you the right to suppress it?” she demanded. Gandhi emphasized that Parliament serves as a forum for accountability, reminding members that they are servants of the people, not their masters.
Erosion of Trust in Examination System
Gandhi highlighted the widespread student protests, noting that thousands had demonstrated peacefully, adhering to principles of truth and non-violence. She lamented that repeated paper leaks, with 152 incidents reported over the last decade and no convictions, had severely eroded students' faith in India's competitive examination system.
She criticized the government for allegedly failing to acknowledge the seriousness of the crisis and for its perceived inability to control the narrative. Gandhi also questioned the reception given to former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in Parliament, contrasting it with the widespread sorrow among students.
Broader Critique and Opposition Support
Concluding her impassioned speech, Gandhi asserted that the government's response to the student protests had damaged its credibility. She broadened her criticism, alleging various forms of “theft” under the current administration, including the “theft of the dreams of the youth.” Gandhi affirmed the Opposition’s unwavering support for the protesting students, vowing to stand with them.
