Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has commended the Indian diaspora for its exemplary conduct, highlighting their peaceful nature and respect for local laws. Speaking to the Indian community in Berlin during his two-day visit to Germany, Goyal emphasized that Indians are widely welcomed globally due to their non-involvement in vandalism or public disturbances.
A Contrast to European Unrest
Goyal's remarks drew a clear distinction between the behavior of Indians living abroad and the instances of violence and property damage reported during recent protests across various European nations. He noted that host countries recognize the Indian community as peace-loving and family-oriented, contributing positively to society without resorting to disruptive actions.
“They know you don't indulge in vandalism. They know you don't go on the streets and create a disturbance to society, like we are seeing in other parts of Europe,” Goyal stated. These comments come against a backdrop of demonstrations in countries like France, Spain, and Italy, where protests over rising living costs, wages, and public services have sometimes escalated into clashes with police and property damage.
Respect Earned Through Contribution
The minister underscored that the Indian diaspora has earned significant respect in their adopted countries through their dignified conduct and valuable contributions. He celebrated their role in fostering strong people-to-people connections and bolstering economic ties, particularly between India and Germany.
Call for Support to Students
Beyond praising the established community, Goyal also made an appeal to long-term Indian residents in Germany. He urged them to extend support to new students arriving from India, especially those facing financial challenges. Recognizing the difficulties new arrivals encounter in adjusting to unfamiliar living conditions and managing limited resources, Goyal suggested that assistance from fellow Indians could significantly ease their transition and help them succeed in their studies and lives overseas.
He further acknowledged the sincerity and hard work of Indian professionals, recognizing their crucial role in strengthening the economies and social fabric of their host nations.
