Twenty-one Indian nationals from Tamil Nadu, undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, have been successfully rescued in Nepal amidst the severe flood crisis along the Nepal-China border. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the rescue efforts are ongoing as the situation remains fluid.
In addition to those rescued, approximately 200 more Indian nationals are currently stranded on the Chinese side of the border and have formally requested assistance for evacuation. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal detailed that 95 of these individuals are in Garchan, traveling towards Bilsa to cross into Nepal. Four are located in Geelong city, while 13 are in Zutulpo, currently en route to Saga.
Broader Flood Impact and Missing Persons
The devastating flash floods, which struck Rasuwa district on Wednesday after an avalanche blocked the flow of the Lhende tributary of the Bhotekoshi River, have left a significant number of people missing. The latest update from the Nepal Tourism Board indicates that 644 Nepali and foreign nationals are still unaccounted for, as of Thursday noon. This list encompasses individuals from 33 different countries.
Indians constitute the largest group among the foreign nationals reported missing, with 178 individuals. Following India, the United States has 65 missing nationals, Ukraine 53, Malaysia 51, and Australia 35. The list also includes 127 Nepali citizens, along with nationals from the UK (33), Canada (25), Germany (8), Singapore (9), Japan (5), New Zealand (5), and France (4).
