Monsoon Approaches Northwest India, Bringing Heatwave Relief Amid Storm Alerts

· · 2 min read

A fresh Western Disturbance and advancing southwest monsoon are set to bring significant weather changes to North and Central India. Residents in Northwest India, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, can expect relief from the intense heatwave with incoming storms, dust, and potential hailstorms.

A dramatic shift in weather patterns is unfolding across India, promising much-needed respite from weeks of severe heatwave conditions. A new Western Disturbance is poised to trigger thundersqualls, hailstorms, and dust storms across parts of North and Central India over the next two days. This development coincides with the southwest monsoon's continued advancement, raising hopes for a significant drop in temperatures, particularly in the Northwest region.

Early Monsoon Activity in Southern India

While northern and central parts of the country grappled with scorching temperatures, southern India experienced widespread rainfall. The Andaman & Nicobar Islands received heavy showers, with substantial precipitation also recorded across Telangana, Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep. Bhoothpur in Telangana's Mahabubnagar district reported the highest single-station rainfall at 11 cm. Isolated hailstorms were also observed in Marathwada and Uttarakhand.

Persistent Heatwave in North Amid Warnings

Despite the advancing monsoon in the south, severe heatwave conditions continued to plague East Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a public advisory, urging citizens to take precautions, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable individuals. He also advised placing water out for birds and animals affected by the extreme heat.

Intensifying Storm Activity Forecast

Weather conditions are expected to become significantly more volatile across North India. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh are bracing for powerful thundersqualls, with wind speeds potentially reaching 60–70 kmph and gusts up to 80 kmph. East Uttar Pradesh may also experience strong squall activity. Isolated hailstorms are forecast for parts of Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued warnings for dust storms in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated in Assam & Meghalaya, Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, and Tamil Nadu & Puducherry.

Monsoon Progress and Temperature Drop Expected

The southwest monsoon continued its progression on Wednesday, extending into parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, sections of the Bay of Bengal, and the remaining areas of the Andaman Sea. Favorable meteorological conditions are expected to facilitate further advancement over the coming days. Northwest India is likely to see a noticeable fall in temperatures between May 28 and May 30, with mercury levels projected to drop by 6–8°C. This change offers a much-needed reprieve for residents in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, who have endured relentless heat in recent weeks.
