Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines have officially signed a definitive contract for the design, development, manufacture, supply, and lifecycle support of a new-generation high-power helicopter engine named 'Aravalli'. The announcement saw HAL's shares gain nearly 1% in Wednesday's trading session.
Aravalli Engine: Powering India's Future Rotorcraft
The 'Aravalli' engine, rated in the 3,500 to 4,000 shp (shaft horsepower) class, has been specifically chosen to power HAL's upcoming 13-ton Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval counterpart, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH). This strategic partnership aims to bolster India's self-reliance in critical aerospace propulsion technologies.
The contract formalizes the collaboration under SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines SAS. This entity will be responsible for the advanced design, manufacturing, testing, and comprehensive product support for the engine throughout its lifecycle.
Boosting Indigenous Capabilities and Self-Reliance
Ravi K, Chairman and Managing Director of HAL, emphasized the significance of the contract. "The signing of this contract marks a significant step forward in India's pursuit of self-reliance in aero-engine technologies," he stated. "Through this collaborative programme with SAFHAL and Safran Helicopter Engines, we are creating a strong foundation for powering next-generation Indian helicopter platforms."
He added that the Aravalli engine programme will not only meet the operational requirements of the IMRH and DBMRH but also contribute substantially to developing a robust domestic aerospace industrial ecosystem. This co-development initiative marks the first time Safran Helicopter Engines has undertaken an engine of this class in such a partnership, highlighting the depth of the strategic relationship between France and India in defense manufacturing.
The agreement was signed by Ajay Kumar Shrivastava, Director, Engineering, Research & Development, HAL, and Olivier Savin, Director, SAFHAL Helicopter Engines and Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Safran Helicopter Engines. The ceremony was presided over by Ravi K and Cedric Goubet, CEO, Safran Helicopter Engines.
Market Reaction and Future Outlook
Following the news, HAL's stock climbed 0.95% to reach a high of Rs 4,936.55 on the BSE, reflecting investor confidence in the long-term prospects of the defense public sector undertaking. This latest gain contributes to a 12% year-to-date increase for the defense stock, underscoring its strong performance in the market.
The 'Aravalli' programme is poised to play a crucial role in strengthening India's indigenous capabilities for future-generation rotorcraft programmes, aligning with the nation's broader 'Make in India' defense initiatives.
