China has reportedly achieved a significant military breakthrough, developing hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs) that can launch air-to-air weapons. This new capability allows the Chinese military to target high-value airborne assets, such as command-and-control platforms, from distances spanning thousands of miles.
The development is part of a broader expansion of China's missile arsenal, which the Pentagon estimated included at least 3,150 ballistic missiles and 300 ground-launched cruise missiles as of 2024. Sources indicate that China has also incorporated air-to-air capabilities into some hypersonic cruise missiles and anti-ship functionalities into several other missile types.
Implications for US Air Operations
This new technology presents a serious challenge to US air operations, particularly in potential conflict scenarios. Aircraft like tankers, airborne warning and control systems, and flying command posts (such as the E-4B Nightwatch), typically operate far from combat zones. However, with this advancement, they could now become direct targets.
For instance, an HGV launched from a DF-17 missile reportedly has a range of approximately 1,500 miles, bringing key US military installations like Guam within striking distance. The more advanced DF-27, with a maximum range of about 5,000 miles, could potentially reach Hawaii.
A key advantage of HGVs is their ability to maneuver through the atmosphere en route to their targets, which significantly extends their effective range and makes interception considerably more difficult. Currently, no other nation is known to possess a weapon system that combines an HGV with air-to-air missile capabilities.
Technical Limitations and Escalation Risks
Despite their advanced capabilities, these systems do have limitations. Utilizing a ballistic missile to engage a distant aircraft is a costly, complex, and inherently risky endeavor. A missile traveling for 20 minutes or more at its maximum range requires exceptionally precise and continuously updated targeting information. Furthermore, the extensive communication chain connecting distant sensors to the missile is vulnerable to disruption.
There is also a critical risk of unintended escalation. Ballistic missile launches, regardless of their intended target, could potentially be misinterpreted as a nuclear attack, leading to a dangerous and unforeseen response.
Concerns for India and Broader Regional Security
China's expanding missile capabilities are also a relevant concern for India, especially as long-range air-to-air weapons become increasingly vital in modern warfare. China's PL-15 air-to-air missile, for example, was reportedly used by Pakistan in a brief conflict with India last year, with claims of several Indian aircraft being shot down.
Since 2015, China's broader missile arsenal has seen substantial growth, with ballistic missile numbers increasing by 147% and ground-launched cruise missiles by 50%, according to Pentagon estimates. This modernization effort, as noted by the US Air Force’s China Aerospace Studies Institute, increasingly focuses on inflicting coordinated damage across an adversary's entire military infrastructure.
