Mamata Banerjee Loses Bhabanipur to Suvendu Adhikari, TMC Era Ends in West Bengal

· · 3 min read

Mamata Banerjee has lost her Bhabanipur constituency to Suvendu Adhikari by 15,000 votes, marking the end of 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule in West Bengal. This defeat follows her 2021 loss in Nandigram, signaling a major political shift.

In a stunning political upset, Mamata Banerjee, the long-standing Chief Minister of West Bengal, has been defeated in her traditional stronghold of Bhabanipur. The pivotal Kolkata constituency, considered her last safe seat, fell to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari by a margin of 15,000 votes in the 2026 state elections. This loss, five years after Adhikari similarly ousted her from Nandigram, signals the dramatic conclusion of the Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s 15-year dominance in the state, with the BJP sweeping to power with approximately 200 of Bengal's 293 seats.

A Dramatic Counting Day Swing

The election outcome in Bhabanipur was far from a foregone conclusion. Early counting saw Mamata Banerjee establish a comfortable lead of over 19,000 votes. However, this advantage steadily eroded throughout the day. By late evening, Adhikari had not only closed the gap but also surged ahead, securing a decisive victory. This remarkable turnaround underscored the intense electoral battle and the shifting political landscape.

Demographic Shifts and BJP Strategy

Bhabanipur's diverse electorate, comprising significant proportions of Bengali Hindu, non-Bengali Hindu, and Muslim voters, played a crucial role. Historically, the non-Bengali Hindu trading communities, particularly Gujaratis and Marwaris, have leaned towards the BJP. This election witnessed a notable shift among Bengali Hindu voters as well, a combination that proved fatal for the TMC.

The BJP's victory was not accidental but the result of meticulous planning. The party engaged in extensive booth-level mapping for months, strategically identifying and consolidating a non-Muslim vote bank by targeting Bengali Hindu and Hindi-speaking trader communities. Suvendu Adhikari, who had previously defeated Banerjee in Nandigram, was deployed as the BJP's primary weapon, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally accompanying him to file his nomination papers, emphasizing the high stakes of this prestige battle.

TMC's Challenges and Governance Fatigue

Despite the TMC's campaign heavily relying on popular welfare schemes like Lakshmir Bhandar, Kanyashree, and Swasthya Sathi, these initiatives ultimately proved insufficient to counter the deep-seated anti-incumbency sentiment. Fifteen years in power had accumulated significant public discontent, fueled by persistent allegations of corruption, the 'cut-money' culture, syndicate politics, and a general governance fatigue.

A particular shadow was cast by the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case, which significantly dented Mamata Banerjee's image, especially among educated urban women voters who were already concerned about employment and safety. Her own public comments during campaigning, stating, "Jodi paren, vote ta amay deben..." ("If you can, do cast your vote for me..."), suggested a premonition of the shifting ground, a sentiment confirmed by Monday's results.

For Suvendu Adhikari, the Bhabanipur win completes a remarkable personal political journey, cementing his status as a giant-killer. For Mamata Banerjee, the loss of her cherished home turf marks the undeniable end of an era in West Bengal politics.
