One person has died and 102 passengers have been rescued after the Indonesian passenger ferry, Virgo Transport 8, encountered severe weather and lost contact in the Java Sea. The vessel, carrying 243 people, was en route from Surabaya to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan when the incident occurred. Search and rescue operations are actively underway for the remaining missing individuals.
Search Efforts Intensify for Missing Passengers
Contact with the Virgo Transport 8 was lost around 02:00 local time on Sunday, with the search and rescue agency receiving a report approximately two hours later. The ferry's last known position was reported to be about 150 kilometers south of Banjarmasin. Authorities have deployed a rescue team to Banjarmasin's Basirih Search and Rescue pier, along with a rescue ship heading towards the last known position, and a helicopter assisting the aerial search.
I Putu Sudayana, head of the local search and rescue office, confirmed that all available personnel and assets are being mobilized due to the large number of people on board. The agency is coordinating closely with maritime authorities and other relevant bodies, while also continuously monitoring the challenging weather conditions in the area. Other vessels in the vicinity have been alerted and requested to report any sightings of passengers or debris.
