Homeowners in Fremont, California's Bay Area, are reporting significant disruptions to their sleep due to repeated late-night noise from events hosted at the Fremont Hindu Temple, also known as Vedic Dharma Samaj. Residents have lodged more than 25 noise complaints, detailing issues like loud music, amplified sound, yelling, flashing lights, and large crowds continuing well past the 9 PM cut-off.
According to reports, the city of Fremont held a meeting with residents and temple representatives in July. City officials confirmed they are actively investigating the complaints and committed to working with both parties to find constructive solutions.
Community Concerns Over Late-Night Gatherings
Neighbours emphasize that their concerns are not about the temple holding religious events, but rather the scale and timing of these gatherings. One anonymous resident shared with NBC Bay Area, "We have had issues with sleep. We have had problems waking up in the morning because these events sometimes go on for very late in the night and it’s been very frustrating." They recounted seeing "hundreds of people at 9:30 and the noise was still going on" during a recent event.
Footage provided by residents reportedly shows flashing lights and loud noise continuing after 9 PM, even for events where they allege no special permit was in place for extended hours. Although the temple reportedly obtained a special event permit for a recent gathering, residents maintain that amplified sound continued beyond the permitted timeframe.
City Investigates and Seeks Solutions
Fremont city staff confirmed receiving complaints about the events and are investigating the alleged permit violations. They stated, "City staff will continue coordinating with the temple and adjacent neighbors, monitoring activities and adjusting future permitted activities as appropriate to work toward constructive solutions to the issues that have been reported."
Residents have urged the temple to consider limiting attendance and being more considerate of the surrounding neighbourhood, especially regarding noisy events held during school hours. Some suggest that the large crowds, sometimes numbering in the tens of thousands as depicted in the temple's social media posts, might necessitate a more appropriate venue with proper permitting.
The Fremont Hindu Temple's Role in the Community
The Fremont Hindu Temple has served the Bay Area's Hindu community since 1985, providing a place for worship, meditation, and religious ceremonies. Its origins trace back to the early 1970s when Indian immigrants began settling in the region and practicing their faith. The community purchased a building in 1982 to establish a permanent place of worship.
While residents support the temple's right to conduct religious programs, the ongoing dispute centers on ensuring compliance with noise restrictions and managing crowd sizes to prevent disruption to the residential area.
