The Indian government has, for the first time, officially disclosed the names of six military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice during Operation Sindoor. This cross-border military campaign was launched in May 2025 in response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 civilian lives.
The announcement marks a significant public acknowledgement of the soldiers' contributions and sacrifices, solidifying their place in India's counter-terrorism narrative. Operation Sindoor involved precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), targeting groups accused of orchestrating cross-border terrorism.
Honoring the Fallen Heroes
The six personnel identified are:
- Subedar Major Pawan Kumar of Headquarters 10 Infantry Brigade
- Rifleman Sunil Kumar of 4 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry
- Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar of 5 Field Regiment
- Agniveer Mood Muralinaik of 851 Light Regiment
- Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh of 237 Field Workshop Company
- Sergeant Surendra Kumar of 39 Wing of the Indian Air Force
These brave individuals’ names have been inscribed on a commemorative brick at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. The memorial's Tyag Chakra, or Circle of Sacrifice, features 16 concentric granite walls, each bearing the names of soldiers who have given their lives in service to the nation since Independence. Each brick records the martyr's name, rank, and regiment, serving as a permanent tribute to their valor.
Operation Sindoor's Legacy
The government's decision to reveal these names underscores growing efforts to document and honor the contributions of all personnel involved in Operation Sindoor. This operation has become a defining chapter in India's counter-terrorism strategy, repeatedly cited by military leaders as a demonstration of India's zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism and a strategic shift towards proactive deterrence against cross-border threats.
Operation Sindoor remains one of the most consequential military actions undertaken by India in recent years. While it led to heightened military tensions between India and Pakistan, both sides eventually agreed to de-escalation measures following the targeted strikes on multiple terror facilities.
