Monsoon's Steady Advance Across India
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the southwest monsoon has made significant progress, extending into additional parts of Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, the remaining areas of Tamil Nadu, and certain regions of West Bengal and Bihar. Conditions remain favorable for the monsoon to continue its advance across central, eastern, and northern India over the next two to three days.
The IMD anticipates the monsoon will spread further into Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, provided atmospheric conditions remain conducive.
Northwest India Braces for Storms
In addition to monsoon-related rainfall, a western disturbance is influencing weather patterns across northwest India. This system is expected to bring thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds to regions including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. The current wet spell over northwest India is predicted to continue until June 13.
The national capital region, encompassing Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad, has been placed under an orange alert. Residents should prepare for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, potentially reaching speeds of up to 70 kmph, particularly between June 11-12.
Heavy Rainfall Warnings for Eastern and Southern Regions
The latest bulletin from the IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall across Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and the northeastern states. Moderate to heavy showers are also expected over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and several other northeastern regions, with a likelihood of thunderstorms and lightning.
Kerala and its adjoining southern states are anticipated to experience active monsoon conditions, while rainfall intensity is set to increase over eastern India as the monsoon progresses further.
Lingering Heatwave Concerns
Despite the advancing monsoon and increased rainfall, the IMD has cautioned that heatwave conditions are likely to persist in isolated pockets of Vidarbha, Telangana, and north coastal Andhra Pradesh. Hot and humid weather is also expected over parts of Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra. Meteorologists highlight India's current weather as a transitional phase, where active monsoon conditions coexist with pre-monsoon heat and western disturbance-driven systems, leading to stark regional variations in temperature and rainfall.
