BRICS vs G7: Who Holds the Edge in Population, Economy, Energy, and Military by 2026?

· · 3 min read

A comprehensive analysis projects the BRICS and G7 blocs' global influence by 2026 across key metrics. This comparison highlights their evolving standings in population, economic output, energy resources, and military capabilities.

As global geopolitical and economic landscapes continue to shift, the power dynamics between the BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) and the G7 group (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States) are under intense scrutiny. Projections for 2026 reveal distinct strengths and weaknesses for each bloc across critical areas like population, economic output, energy resources, and military might.

Population: BRICS' Overwhelming Numbers

By 2026, the original five BRICS nations are expected to collectively represent approximately 40% of the world's population, totaling around 3.24 billion people. In stark contrast, the G7 countries will account for roughly 10% of the global populace, with an estimated 777 million inhabitants. This significant demographic advantage gives BRICS a substantial human resource base and potential consumer market.

Economy: G7 Maintains GDP Lead, BRICS Growing Influence

Despite BRICS' demographic dominance, the G7 bloc is projected to retain a considerable lead in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2026. The G7's combined GDP is forecast to reach approximately $45 trillion, constituting about 43% of the global economy. The BRICS nations, while growing rapidly, are expected to achieve a combined GDP of around $28 trillion, making up 28% of the world's economic output. However, the BRICS' share of global GDP has been steadily increasing, indicating a shift in economic gravity over time.

Energy: BRICS' Resource Abundance

In the crucial energy sector, BRICS nations demonstrate a clear advantage. By 2026, they are projected to produce 30% of the world's oil, compared to the G7's 20%. More significantly, BRICS collectively controls an estimated 44% of global oil reserves, while the G7 holds only 11%. Similar trends are visible in natural gas production (BRICS 34%, G7 20%) and coal production (BRICS 30%, G7 10%). This resource dominance positions BRICS as a major player in global energy markets.

Military: G7's Spending Power vs. BRICS' Manpower

When it comes to military capabilities, the comparison reveals a nuanced picture. The G7 nations are projected to account for approximately 50% of global military spending by 2026, significantly outpacing BRICS' 35%. This financial superiority often translates into advanced technology and equipment. In terms of active military personnel, however, BRICS holds the advantage with an estimated 5.5 million active soldiers, compared to the G7's 3.3 million. Regarding nuclear capabilities, the G7 possesses around 3,750 nuclear warheads, while BRICS (excluding the full arsenals of individual members like Russia and China) holds about 2,500.

The Impact of BRICS Expansion

It is important to note that these projections primarily consider the original five BRICS members. However, the BRICS bloc is set for significant expansion in 2026, with countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, UAE, Egypt, and Ethiopia slated to join. This expansion would dramatically alter the comparisons, further increasing BRICS' share of global population, energy resources, and potentially economic and military influence, signaling a more multipolar world order.
