Guwahati, Assam – Senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma was officially sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for his second consecutive term on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya during a ceremony held at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara.

Sarma's re-election follows a dominant performance in the recent Assam assembly elections, where he secured his Jalukbari constituency for the sixth time since 2001, winning by a significant margin of over 89,000 votes. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) collectively clinched 102 out of the total 126 seats in the state, reaffirming strong public support.

Key Figures Attend Swearing-In Ceremony

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several prominent political figures, including West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Alongside Sarma, a council of ministers also took their oaths. Notable individuals joining the cabinet included former Union Minister Rameswar Teli, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora, Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) leader Chandan Brahma, and BJP MLA Ajanta Neog.

Election Results Overview

The comprehensive results of the Assam election saw the Congress party reduced to 19 seats. Other parties, including the AIUDF and Raijor Dal, each secured two seats, while the Trinamool Congress won a single seat in the northeastern state. Sarma's continued leadership is widely seen as a mandate for the NDA's policies and governance in Assam.
