New Delhi – In a swift operation, Delhi Police successfully recovered ₹3 lakh in Indian and US currency for a South African delegate who had inadvertently left the cash in a taxi. The money was was returned to the grateful delegate just 30 minutes before his scheduled international flight from New Delhi on Monday, September 14, 2026.
The incident unfolded on Sunday when the delegate realized the significant sum, comprising both Indian rupees and US dollars, was missing from his belongings and likely left in the cab he had taken. He promptly approached local police authorities for assistance.
Responding immediately, Delhi Police personnel initiated efforts to trace the vehicle. Through coordinated efforts with relevant agencies, the specific cab was identified and located. The quick action led to the recovery of the entire amount, which was then reunited with its owner, allowing him to proceed with his travel plans without further hindrance.
Delegate Attended BRICS Summit in New Delhi
The South African delegate had been in New Delhi to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, which took place from September 12 to 13, 2026. The summit brought together leaders and representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to discuss global economic and political cooperation.
During the summit, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Discussions focused on strengthening the India-South Africa strategic partnership across various sectors, including mining, infrastructure, food security, and digital public infrastructure.
