Dakar Rally 2027 Relocates Amid Regional Tensions
The Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) and Saudi Motorsport Company (SMC) have jointly announced that the Dakar Rally's 2027 edition, originally slated for January 1-15 in Saudi Arabia, will instead be held in a different territory. This decision, described as "exceptional and one-off," comes in response to "recent developments in the region," according to a joint statement.
While the specific new host country for the 2027 rally is yet to be disclosed, organizers confirmed it will be announced in the coming days. Despite this temporary relocation, Saudi Arabia remains committed to the event, with plans to host the landmark 50th edition of the Dakar Rally in 2028.
Reasons Behind the Shift
The move stems from escalating regional instability. Although the official statement cited only "recent developments," the broader context includes ongoing conflict and recent Houthi attacks on key areas within Saudi Arabia, including Riyadh Airport. Such security concerns have reportedly made the logistics of hosting a large-scale international event like the Dakar Rally challenging for 2027.
This situation mirrors adjustments seen in other major motorsport events across the Middle East. While some, like Formula 1 and MotoGP races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, are proceeding, Saudi Arabia's sporting calendar has faced increased scrutiny due to the volatile environment.
A Temporary Departure
Saudi Arabia has been the host of the Dakar Rally since 2020, successfully staging seven consecutive editions that showcased the Kingdom's diverse and challenging landscapes to competitors from around the world. The ASO, SMC, and the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation (SAMF) have reaffirmed their long-term strategic partnership, emphasizing their commitment to developing motorsport in the region.
The decision to relocate for 2027 has received support from motorsport governing bodies, the FIA and FIM, highlighting the collaborative nature of this adjustment. Both ASO and SMC are already working together to ensure the 2028 edition in Saudi Arabia will be an "exceptional moment" for the rally and the host nation.
Looking Ahead for Dakar
Organizers are in direct contact with competitors, teams, and partners to facilitate a smooth transition for the 2027 event. While no replacement venue, specific route details, or exact dates have been announced for the upcoming edition, the Dakar Rally is known for its rigorous off-road stages, challenging cars, bikes, quads, trucks, and challenger-class machinery across punishing terrain.
