Actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay is set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10, 2026. The oath-taking ceremony will take place at 3:15 PM at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, marking the end of a four-day political deadlock in the state.
Coalition Secures Majority
Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party in the recent Assembly elections, securing 108 seats. However, this fell short of the 118-seat majority required to form the government independently. The political uncertainty concluded on May 9 when the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) announced their unconditional support for the TVK.
“We have extended our support to ensure that the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) does not become an obstacle to Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam — which has secured 108 seats — forming the government, and to prevent the imposition of President's Rule in Tamil Nadu,” stated VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan.
With the additional backing from the Congress (5 seats), the Communist Party of India (CPI) (2 seats), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) (2 seats), the coalition's strength now stands at 121 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), comfortably surpassing the majority mark.
A Historic Shift in State Leadership
Outgoing Chief Minister MK Stalin acknowledged the decision of the alliance partners to prioritize political stability, stating that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) would act as a constructive opposition. Meanwhile, Chennai has erupted in celebration, with TVK workers and supporters gathering outside party headquarters and Raj Bhavan, lighting firecrackers to commemorate the successful formation of the government.
This upcoming swearing-in ceremony represents a significant moment in Tamil Nadu's political history, as C. Joseph Vijay prepares to lead the state's first government in decades that is not formed by either the DMK or the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
