The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has reported a substantial expansion in Gujarat's local body elections, securing over 650 seats, a more than tenfold increase from the 69 seats it held in the previous cycle. This surge indicates the party's growing presence across urban, rural, and tribal regions of the state.
Despite this overall growth, AAP experienced a significant setback in Surat, a city where it previously held 27 municipal seats. In the latest elections, the party was reduced to just four seats, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tightening its control over the city. The BJP maintained its overwhelming dominance across Gujarat, winning all 15 municipal corporations and 33 out of 34 district panchayats.
A notable breakthrough for AAP came in Narmada, where it won the lone remaining district panchayat not secured by the BJP. This victory is seen by party leaders as a symbolic indication of shifting political dynamics in the region. AAP also demonstrated strength in the tribal belt of Dediapada, sweeping all 11 district panchayat seats, while the BJP failed to win any in that area.
Furthermore, AAP claimed victories in more than 10 taluka panchayats, including securing 10 out of 16 seats in the Bagasara taluka panchayat in Amreli district. Isudan Gadhvi, an AAP leader, affirmed the party's significant gains, stating that the results were achieved despite pressure on party workers, including over 170 FIRs and arrests.
The Congress party, in contrast, failed to secure control of any district panchayat, further highlighting the BJP's continued stronghold and AAP's emerging role as a more prominent challenger in specific parts of Gujarat.
