Xbox CEO Asha Sharma Details Multi-Year Growth Strategy Amid Layoffs & Revenue Decline

· · 2 min read

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has unveiled a multi-year growth strategy to reverse declining revenue and recent layoffs. The plan targets restoring player and revenue growth by fiscal year 2027, focusing on core platform strength, franchise expansion, and deeper fan engagement.

Microsoft-owned Xbox is embarking on an ambitious turnaround, with CEO Asha Sharma outlining a comprehensive multi-year growth strategy aimed at revitalizing the gaming division. This strategic roadmap comes amidst a challenging period for Xbox, marked by significant layoffs, studio restructuring, and a notable decline in both content and hardware revenue.

Reversing Recent Struggles

In an internal memo circulated on July 30, 2026, Sharma communicated to employees that the gaming division is intensely focused on reversing its recent struggles. This follows Microsoft's announcement of thousands of job cuts across its gaming sector, part of a broader organizational reset. Recent quarterly results underscored these challenges, revealing a 10% drop in Xbox content and services revenue and a 13% decline in hardware revenue.

Four Pillars of Recovery

Sharma's memo detailed four critical priorities designed to guide Xbox's recovery and future growth:

  • Strengthen the core platform: Consoles will remain central to the Xbox ecosystem.
  • Expand successful games: Transform existing popular titles into global entertainment franchises.
  • Transform Minecraft: Position Minecraft as the world's leading creator platform.
  • Deepen fan engagement: Extend popular gaming worlds across diverse experiences and media.

The CEO stated a clear objective: "By the end of FY27, we will return XBOX to player and revenue growth." She emphasized that every function and studio within Xbox would be accountable for contributing to these set goals and scaling profitability to industry standards.

Long-Term Vision for Xbox

Beyond the immediate recovery, Sharma presented a long-term roadmap extending through 2030. This vision aims to reach halfway toward Xbox's ultimate ambition of entertaining one billion people daily by the end of the decade. Currently, Xbox reportedly serves around 100 million daily users.

The strategy includes expanding major franchises such as Minecraft, Fallout, and Candy Crush through various avenues, including media adaptations, consumer products, strategic partnerships, and international expansion, notably into China.

Leadership Amidst Change

Asha Sharma assumed the role of Xbox CEO earlier this year and has since overseen substantial structural changes. These initiatives include spinning off several studios, streamlining management layers, and strategically refocusing investment on the company's largest franchises and core platforms. This turnaround plan is a direct response to a difficult financial period for Xbox, even as Microsoft's overall performance has been bolstered by its robust cloud and AI businesses.
