Tech Giants Meta, Microsoft, Google Offer Voluntary Exit Packages Amid AI Shift

· · 3 min read

Major tech companies Meta, Microsoft, and Google are implementing voluntary exit offers (VEOs) globally, allowing eligible employees to leave with financial compensation. This strategy aims to streamline workforces as investments in AI and automation increase.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape the technology sector, leading global companies like Meta, Microsoft, and Google are increasingly utilizing voluntary exit offers (VEOs) to optimize their workforces. These programs allow eligible employees to depart with financial compensation and support, differing from traditional layoffs by providing employees the choice to accept or decline the offer.

What is a Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO)?

A VEO is a company-initiated program designed to reduce headcount, reorganize departments, and align staffing with evolving business priorities. Unlike involuntary layoffs, VEOs empower employees to make a personal decision about their future, typically within a specified timeframe. The packages often include financial severance, and sometimes additional benefits such as health insurance, career counseling, or retraining assistance.

Meta's Voluntary Departure Program in France

Meta is reportedly in discussions regarding a voluntary departure program for approximately 100 employees in France, out of its 300-person workforce there. This initiative utilizes France's rupture conventionnelle collective (RCC), a collective contractual termination mechanism. Negotiations with employee representatives and trade unions are crucial to establish the final terms.

  • Severance: Reportedly 2.15 months of salary for every year of service.
  • Mobility Leave: A proposed 10 months of mobility leave, paid at 80% of gross salary.
  • Support: Professional retraining or business setup assistance is under consideration.
  • Deadline: Application deadline reportedly set for November 5, 2026, following negotiations that began in July 2026.

This move aligns with Meta's broader restructuring efforts, which included laying off 8,000 employees in May and reallocating 7,000 roles to bolster its AI initiatives.

Microsoft's VEO Across Four Countries

Microsoft announced its Voluntary Exit Offer on October 26, 2026, targeting around 60,000 eligible employees in India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The program is open to eligible employees at internal job level 70 and below, though participation is also subject to organizational requirements and business priorities.

  • Indian Employees: Reports indicate a package including one month's base salary for each completed year of service, plus health insurance and career transition support.
  • Decision Deadline: Eligible Indian employees reportedly have until December 1, 2026, to decide.

Approximately 3,000 employees reportedly accepted Microsoft's VEO in 2026.

Google's Buyout Offers in Five Countries

Google has extended its voluntary buyout program to selected employees in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and Switzerland. Initially introduced by some teams in 2025, the program expanded internationally in June 2026. Eligibility varies by location and business unit, with certain strategic functions excluded.

  • Switzerland: Employees who accepted the reported offer received one month's salary for every year of service, capped at 12 months' salary.
  • Other Countries: Exact terms for other countries have not been publicly disclosed.

Google has not announced the total number of employees eligible for or accepting the latest offers.

Key Considerations for Employees

Employees contemplating a VEO should thoroughly evaluate the entire package, not just the immediate financial payout. Important factors include:

  • Financial Compensation: Understand the calculation method (e.g., based on base or gross salary, years of service), payment dates, tax implications, and any applicable limits.
  • Health Insurance: Check the duration of continued coverage, family benefits, and any premiums payable post-departure.
  • Career Transition Support: Assess the value of career counseling, retraining, job-placement assistance, and professional development resources.
  • Mobility Leave: If offered, like Meta's reported proposal in France, understand its duration and compensation structure.

Additionally, clarify the fate of unvested stock awards, bonuses, pension contributions, unused leave, notice periods, and other contractual obligations, as these significantly impact the overall value of an offer.
