Aman Sanger, a 25-year-old Indian-origin founder, is at the center of one of the enterprise AI sector's most significant acquisitions. His company, Anysphere Inc., the parent of the innovative AI coding assistant Cursor, is being acquired by Elon Musk's SpaceX for a staggering $60 billion.
The acquisition, detailed in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, is anticipated to finalize by the third quarter of 2026, integrating Anysphere fully into the SpaceX portfolio.
The Vision Behind Anysphere and Cursor
Sanger, who began coding at age 14, co-founded Anysphere in 2022 with Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, and Arvid Lunnemark, all fellow alumni from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Prior to Anysphere, Sanger gained experience at Bridgewater Associates and Google, and also managed an AI consultancy.
The core philosophy of Anysphere was to develop AI tools that integrate seamlessly within a developer's workflow, rather than existing as external add-ons. After an initial exploration into AI for computer-aided design, the team pivoted to focus on software engineering, which led to the creation of Cursor.
Cursor's Impact on Software Development
Cursor distinguishes itself from other coding assistants by its comprehensive scope. Unlike tools that offer only line-by-line autocomplete, Cursor is designed to understand and reason across entire codebases. This capability allows it to generate complex code, identify and rectify bugs, and handle programming tasks that demand genuine judgment.
This innovative approach quickly garnered significant traction. Cursor currently serves over 50,000 teams, including engineering departments at major corporations such as Nvidia, Adobe, Uber, Shopify, and PayPal. The company asserts that its tools are utilized by 64% of Fortune 500 firms, collectively generating more than 100 million lines of code daily through the platform. This rapid growth attracted substantial investor interest, with Cursor achieving a $29.3 billion valuation last year following funding rounds from Accel and Coatue, reporting annualized revenue exceeding $1 billion.
Pioneering "Vibe Coding"
Cursor has also played a pivotal role in a cultural shift within software development, becoming closely associated with the concept of "vibe coding." This practice involves crafting software using natural language prompts rather than traditional line-by-line instructions. The term's growing influence was recognized when Collins Dictionary named "vibe coding" its Word of the Year for 2025.
A Family of Innovators
Aman Sanger's background includes strong influences from his family. His father, Arvind Sanger, is an IIT Bombay alumnus who built a successful career in hedge funds. His mother, Shilpa Sanger, is an orthodontist, entrepreneur, and serves on the board of Pratham USA, an education non-profit.
