India's smartphone market is experiencing a significant shift this festive season, with premium refurbished devices and exchange offers gaining unprecedented traction. A new report indicates that trade-ins for smartphones priced above ₹50,000 have quadrupled, while sales of refurbished units in the same segment have more than doubled.
This surge comes as rising new smartphone prices and declining shipments put pressure on traditional demand. According to Omdia, smartphone shipments saw a 26% year-on-year decline in Q3 2026, with Counterpoint Research projecting a 12% year-on-year fall in festive-season volumes. Consumers are actively seeking more affordable avenues to access high-end technology.
Why Premium Refurbished Phones Are Gaining Traction
Refurbished phones present a compelling cost-effective alternative. Data from Cashify shows that these devices are approximately 26% cheaper for 'superb-grade' and 36% cheaper for 'best-value-grade' models compared to brand-new units. Specifically, superb-grade refurbished iPhones are about 25% less expensive, and Android counterparts are around 31% cheaper.
"As smartphone prices keep rising, consumers continue to aspire to own premium devices. What's changing is how they access them. Recommerce is opening up more ways to make these upgrades possible. Consumers can put the value of their existing devices towards a new purchase, or choose a refurbished premium smartphone. Both options give consumers greater choice and flexibility in how they access the devices they want."

The company's exchange data further highlights this trend: exchange volumes increased by 25%, with the total value of exchanged devices rising 40%. The average trade-in value reached ₹15,105. Motorola recorded a notable 79% growth in festive upgrade activity, followed by Google at 74%, while Samsung maintained the highest overall volume.
iPhone Demand Shifts and Geographical Expansion
While the iPhone 13 remains the largest contributor to iPhone trade-ins, accounting for 23% of all iPhones exchanged on Cashify, growth is now shifting towards newer generations like the iPhone 14, 15, and 16. In refurbished sales, the iPhone 13 still leads by volume, but demand is increasingly gravitating towards the iPhone 15, 16, and 17. The recent launch of the latest iPhone models has also boosted the supply of previous-generation devices.
Geographically, the trend is expanding beyond major metropolitan areas. Tier 3 and smaller markets collectively grew 49% compared to the previous festive season, outperforming the 39% growth observed across the six major metros. Delhi and Bengaluru still contribute significantly, accounting for 30% of refurbished sales, but cities like Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Gurugram are seeing rates 4-7% above normal. Smaller towns such as Trivandrum, Nashik, and Rajkot have nearly doubled their activity, underscoring the widespread adoption of this new upgrade model.
