OpenAI Halts New Pro Subscriptions Amid "Unprecedented" Astra AI Demand

· · 2 min read

OpenAI has temporarily paused new sign-ups for its $200/month Pro plan. The move comes as its powerful new Astra AI model is experiencing "unprecedented" demand, straining the company's computing infrastructure.

OpenAI has announced a temporary halt to new subscriptions for its $200-per-month Pro plan. The decision stems from overwhelming demand for the company's recently launched Astra artificial intelligence model, which has put significant pressure on OpenAI’s computing infrastructure.

Thibault Sottiaux, a product leader at OpenAI, confirmed the pause via an X post, describing it as the “smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible.” He noted that the Pro plan, with its advanced features, places the most strain on their systems. Existing Pro plan subscribers will not be affected by this change and will retain full access to Astra and other services.

Astra's Impact on OpenAI's Infrastructure

Launched on September 3, Astra is positioned by OpenAI as a generational leap in AI capabilities, offering advanced reasoning, coding, and computer-use functionalities. The company even promoted Astra as the "start of the AGI era," generating substantial user interest and, consequently, immense demand that has taxed OpenAI's systems.

Sottiaux had previously indicated the company was facing "unprecedented" demand on September 9, stating, "We’re pulling all the levers possible to sustain the demand, but I’ve not seen anything like it until now." He emphasized that maintaining excellent service for current users remains the priority.

Alternative Access and Future Outlook

While the Pro plan is unavailable for new sign-ups, users can still access Astra through other subscription tiers, including Plus subscriptions, Enterprise accounts, and via the API. Cheaper plans across API, Go, and Plus remain open for new subscribers.

This strategic pause allows OpenAI to protect the performance and experience for its existing user base as it works to scale its computing foundation to support long-term growth and sustained demand for its cutting-edge AI models.
